He was a Sicilian writer who loved his country, his family and his friends and a person of fragile physical constitution. Perhaps for this reason, and because of his profession as a medical doctor, illness always accompanied him in life and in literature, and his poetic language was abundantly nourished by the materials that both illness and medicine offered him.
